Rename files automatically by their content on Mac
Give scans, screenshots and photos real names from what's inside them.
Three steps. That's it.
- 1
Drop your files
Drag files onto Smart Rename, choose them with Choose Files, or right-click them in Finder.
- 2
Choose the options
Set what you need in the options panel, such as start names with the date. Your choices are remembered for next time.
- 3
Get the result
The result lands in a new dated folder in Downloads › OneMacTools. Your originals are never changed.
What Smart Rename does
Scan_0042.pdf becomes "2026-10-04 Electricity Bill Tata Power.pdf". OneMacTools reads each file on your Mac, writes a short descriptive title with Apple Intelligence (or from the text itself when it's off), and adds the document's date. A rename log is always saved.
It's also a Finder Quick Action: right-click files and choose OMT: Smart Rename.
Uses Apple Intelligence on-device when it's on, and falls back to on-device text recognition when it's off.
Options
Great for
- Organise a folder of scans
- Make screenshots findable
- Name receipts for your accountant
Questions about Smart Rename
Does Smart Rename upload my files?
No. Smart Rename runs entirely on your Mac, so your files never leave it and it works offline.
Will Smart Rename change my original files?
No. Results are saved as new files in a dated folder in Downloads › OneMacTools, and your originals are left exactly as they were unless you turn on an option that says otherwise.
Does Smart Rename need Apple Intelligence?
It uses Apple Intelligence's on-device model when it's turned on, for the best results. When it's off, OneMacTools falls back to on-device text recognition and rules, and tells you.
Can I use Smart Rename from Finder?
Yes. Right-click files in Finder and choose Quick Actions › “OMT: Smart Rename”. It runs in the background and notifies you when it's done.
