Why is my Mac slow? How to find the app behind it

A slow Mac is usually one app using a lot of CPU, memory pressure from too many open apps or browser tabs, a nearly full disk, or the Mac slowing itself down to stay cool. Mac Health names the app behind each of these in one line.

The four usual causes

CPU: one app (often a browser tab, a build, or a stuck process) keeps a core busy. Memory: when memory pressure turns yellow or red, macOS swaps to disk and everything waits. Disk: with less than about 10% free, macOS has little room for swap and caches. Heat: when the Mac is hot, macOS lowers speed to cool down.

Find the culprit with Mac Health

  1. Open OneMacTools › Mac Health. The line at the top says what's wrong, for example “Busy: Xcode has used 6 cores for 12 minutes” or “Memory is tight: Chrome is using 9 GB”.
  2. In the Apps tab, sort by CPU or Memory. Every app's helper processes are counted under it, so Chrome is one row, not forty.
  3. Check Memory for the pressure level and apps sitting idle in the background, and Awake & Heat for heat.
  4. Quit what you don't need. Quit asks first and lets the app save your work.

If it happened earlier

Mac Health keeps history while OneMacTools runs. Ask “what slowed my Mac down this morning?” in ⌘K Ask, or open Mac Health › History and click the spike to see the apps behind it.

Questions

What is kernel_task and why is it using so much CPU?

kernel_task is the core of macOS. It deliberately uses CPU time to slow other work when the Mac is too hot, so a busy kernel_task usually means heat, not a problem with it.

Does clearing RAM speed up a Mac?

Not really. macOS fills free memory with caches on purpose and gives it back when an app needs it. Quitting apps you don't use is what helps.

Can I get an alert when an app slows my Mac?

Yes. OneMacTools alerts you when an app keeps the CPU busy for 10 minutes or keeps growing in memory, with Quit and Mute buttons.
