# Screen Recorder — Screen recorder for Mac with audio

Record a window, an app or the whole screen, with sound, as MP4 or GIF. Part of OneMacTools, 151 private tools in one native Mac app (macOS 26 or later); category: Utilities. Runs on your Mac; nothing is uploaded.

Pick a window, an app or a display with the macOS picker, or record the entire screen in one click. Include system audio, your microphone and the pointer, highlight the pointer and clicks, or zoom in smoothly wherever you click, then save an MP4 or a GIF that's ready for docs and bug reports. Start and stop recordings from the menu bar.

## How to use it
1. **Set the sound and pointer.** Before you start, choose whether to record system audio, your microphone and the pointer, and pick MP4 or GIF.
2. **Choose what to record.** Click Choose Window or Display… to pick a single window, an app or a display with the macOS picker, or click Record Entire Screen to record your main display straight away. You can also start from the OneMacTools menu bar icon with Record Screen….
3. **Allow Screen Recording the first time.** macOS asks for permission the first time. Turn on OneMacTools in System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording, then quit and reopen OneMacTools.
4. **Record.** A timer counts up in the window while you record, and the menu bar icon turns red.
5. **Stop the recording.** Click Stop Recording in the window (or press Command-Escape while it's in front), choose Stop Recording from the OneMacTools menu bar icon, or use the macOS recording indicator in the menu bar.
6. **Find the file.** The recording is saved as Screen Recording with the date and time in a new dated folder in Downloads › OneMacTools. Use Preview (eye) to watch it or Show in Finder to open the folder.

## Options
- **Record system audio:** On by default. Records the sound your Mac plays, such as a video, an app or a call. Turn it off for silent walkthroughs or if notification sounds would get in the way.
- **Record microphone:** Off by default. Turn it on to narrate as you go. macOS may ask you to allow microphone access the first time.
- **Show the pointer:** On by default. Turn it off when the pointer would distract, for example in a clean product clip.
- **Highlight the pointer and clicks:** On by default. A soft yellow glow follows the pointer and a pulse marks each click, added when the recording is saved.
- **Zoom in where I click:** Off by default. The video glides in towards each click and back out, like a produced demo. Your recording itself isn't changed until it's saved, and turning this off keeps the full view.
- **Save as:** MP4 or GIF. MP4 keeps full quality and sound and is the better choice for anything longer than a few seconds. GIF makes a silent, looping animation for docs, chats and bug reports.
- **GIF width:** Only shown when Save as is GIF. 480, 640, 800 or 1024 px wide, 800 by default. Recordings narrower than this aren't enlarged. Smaller widths make much smaller files.

## Tips
- Record a single window rather than the whole screen when you can. The file is smaller, and notifications and other apps stay out of the shot.
- Turn on Do Not Disturb before you record so messages and alerts don't pop up mid-recording.
- Keep GIFs short, ideally under 15 seconds. GIFs have no sound and grow large quickly, so use MP4 for anything longer.
- Use the menu bar icon to start and stop, so the OneMacTools window doesn't have to be on screen while you record.
- If you close the window you're recording, the recording stops and what was captured so far is saved.

## Questions
**How do I record my screen with sound on a Mac?**
Leave Record system audio on, then click Choose Window or Display… or Record Entire Screen. The sound your Mac plays is recorded into the MP4 along with the picture.

**How do I record my voice while recording the screen?**
Turn on Record microphone before you start. You can record system audio and your microphone together, which suits narrated walkthroughs.

**Why does OneMacTools say it needs Screen Recording permission?**
macOS only lets apps capture the screen with your permission. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording, turn on OneMacTools (click + to add it if it isn't listed), then quit and reopen the app.

**How do I stop a screen recording on a Mac?**
Click Stop Recording in the OneMacTools window, choose Stop Recording from the OneMacTools menu bar icon, or use the macOS recording indicator in the menu bar. The file is saved as soon as you stop.

**Can I record just one window instead of the whole screen?**
Yes. Click Choose Window or Display… and pick a single window or a whole app in the macOS picker. Only that window or app is recorded.

**How do I turn a screen recording into a GIF?**
Set Save as to GIF and choose a width before you record. When you stop, the recording is converted to a looping GIF at 12 frames per second.

**Where are my screen recordings saved?**
In a new dated folder in Downloads › OneMacTools, named Screen Recording with the date and time.

**Can I hide the mouse pointer in a screen recording?**
Yes. Turn off Show the pointer before you start recording.
