## How to use it
1. **Drop a song or video.** Drag in an MP3, M4A, WAV or other audio file, or a video whose soundtrack you want.
2. **Choose where it starts.** Type the moment the ringtone should begin in Start at, such as 0:45 for the chorus. Leave it empty to start at the beginning.
3. **Pick the length.** Choose 15, 20, 25 or 30 seconds, and leave Fade in and out on for a gentle start and finish.
4. **Click Make Ringtone.** An .m4r file is saved with “ringtone” added to its name, in a new dated folder in Downloads › OneMacTools. Play it with the Preview (eye) button.
5. **Add it to your iPhone.** Connect your iPhone, select it in the Finder sidebar and drag the .m4r onto its window. Then choose it in Settings › Sounds & Haptics › Ringtone on the iPhone.

## Options
- **Start at:** Where in the song the ringtone begins, as minutes and seconds (0:45) or seconds (45). Empty means the start of the file. Play the song first to find the best moment, often the chorus.
- **Length:** 15, 20, 25 or 30 seconds, 30 by default. 30 seconds is the longest an iPhone ringtone can be. If the song ends sooner, the ringtone simply stops at the end.
- **Fade in and out:** On by default. Fades in over the first 0.6 seconds and out over the last 1.5 seconds, so the ringtone doesn't start or stop abruptly.

## Tips
- Start a fraction before the beat you want. A quick fade-in means the first half-second is quieter.
- Pick a part with a strong, recognisable sound. Quiet intros are easy to miss in a pocket.
- Use 15 seconds for a text or alert tone and 30 for a call ringtone.
- Make several versions with different start times and keep the one you like best.
- Only make ringtones from music you own or are allowed to use.

## Questions
**How do I make a ringtone for my iPhone on a Mac?**
Drop the song onto Ringtone Maker, choose the start time and length and click Make Ringtone. Then connect your iPhone, select it in the Finder sidebar and drag the .m4r file onto it.

**How do I add a ringtone to my iPhone without iTunes?**
On current macOS, iPhones appear in the Finder sidebar. Select yours and drag the .m4r file onto its window, then pick it in Settings › Sounds & Haptics › Ringtone.

**How long can an iPhone ringtone be?**
Up to 30 seconds. Ringtone Maker lets you choose 15, 20, 25 or 30 seconds.

**What is an .m4r file?**
It's the iPhone ringtone format: AAC audio, the same as an M4A, with a different extension so the iPhone treats it as a ringtone.

**Can I make a ringtone from a video?**
Yes. Drop the video in and the ringtone is made from its soundtrack.

**Why does the ringtone start quietly?**
Fade in and out is on, so the first 0.6 seconds rise from silence. Turn it off for a sharp start, or set the start time slightly earlier.

**Can I use it as a text tone?**
Yes. Once it's on your iPhone, it appears in the list for text tones and other alerts in Settings › Sounds & Haptics too.
