# Remove Background — Remove the background from a photo on Mac

Lift the subject out of a photo into a transparent PNG, on-device. Part of OneMacTools, 151 private tools in one native Mac app (macOS 26 or later); category: Images. Runs on your Mac; nothing is uploaded.

Apple's Vision framework finds the subject of the photo, whether a person, a pet or a product, and saves it as a transparent PNG, optionally cropped tight around the subject.

## How to use it
1. **Drop your photos.** Add portraits, pets or product shots, as many as you like. Or select them in Finder, right-click and choose Quick Actions › OMT: Remove Background.
2. **Choose whether to crop.** Leave Crop to subject off to keep the original size, or turn it on to trim the empty space around the subject.
3. **Click Remove.** Apple's Vision framework finds the subject in each photo and cuts it out on your Mac.
4. **Use the cut-outs.** Each one is a transparent PNG with “cutout” in its name, saved in a new dated folder in Downloads › OneMacTools. Open them with the Preview (eye) button or Show in Finder.

## Options
- **Keep:** Everything in front keeps every person and object the photo's subject detection finds, so a group photo keeps everyone. Only the main subject keeps just the biggest one, which drops stray objects or lights in the background that were picked up too.
- **Crop to subject:** Off by default. When on, the PNG is trimmed to the subject, which is handy for stickers, logos and product shots. When off, it keeps the photo's original size and position, which is easier for lining up several cut-outs.

## Tips
- Use photos where the subject stands out clearly from the background. Good contrast and sharp edges give the cleanest cut-out.
- If a photo has several people or objects, all the main subjects are kept together.
- Turn on Crop to subject for stickers and product images, then use Add Border to Image to put them on a coloured background.
- Fine hair and see-through objects like glass are the hardest parts. Check the edges with the Preview button before using a cut-out in print.
- Keep the PNG. Saving a cut-out as JPEG fills the transparent areas with white.

## Questions
**Does it work on people, pets and products?**
Yes. Apple's Vision framework finds the main subject, whether a person, an animal or an object, and cuts it out on your Mac.

**What format is the result?**
A PNG with a transparent background, ready to place on any colour or photo. Turn on Crop to subject to trim the empty space around it.

**How do I remove the background from a photo on a Mac?**
Drop the photo onto Remove Background and click Remove, or right-click it in Finder and choose Quick Actions › OMT: Remove Background. The cut-out is saved as a transparent PNG.

**Can I remove the background from many photos at once?**
Yes. Drop a whole batch, such as product photos for a shop, and each gets its own transparent PNG.

**Why does it say it couldn't find a subject?**
The photo doesn't have a clear foreground subject, such as a landscape or a plain texture. Try a photo where the person or object stands out from what's behind it.

**How do I put the subject on a white or coloured background?**
Cut it out here, then use Add Border to Image with a white or custom colour, or place the PNG on any background in your design app.
