# CleanMyMac alternatives in 2026: honest options for a full or slow Mac

CleanMyMac isn't the only way to free up space or speed up a Mac. We compare the built-in tools, DaisyDisk, iStat Menus, Vitals and OneMacTools, with prices and what each is best at.

CleanMyMac is the best-known Mac cleaner, and it does a lot: clean-up, malware scanning, an uninstaller and updates in one Smart Care button. It's also a subscription at $39.95 a year for one Mac, or $119.95 once.

Before you pay, it helps to know what problem you're actually solving. "My disk is full" and "my Mac feels slow" need different tools. Some of them are free and already on your Mac.

## First: is your Mac full, or slow?

- **Full:** you get "Your disk is almost full", can't install updates, or System Settings shows a huge grey **System Data** bar. You need a tool that shows **what's taking space** and what's safe to remove.
- **Slow:** fans spin, apps beachball, the battery drains fast. You need a tool that shows **which app is responsible**, and ideally what happened before you noticed.

A cleaner rarely fixes a slow Mac by itself. Usually one app is using too much memory or CPU, and closing or updating it is the fix.

## Start with what's free

Two built-in tools cover the basics:

- **System Settings › General › Storage** shows space by category, with recommendations such as emptying the Trash automatically and reviewing large files.
- **Activity Monitor** shows every process's CPU, memory and energy use right now, with full detail.

**Where they stop:** Storage settings doesn't explain System Data, which is often the biggest part. Activity Monitor lists hundreds of processes, so one browser can appear as dozens of helpers. It has no history, so if your Mac was slow an hour ago, the evidence is gone.

If those are enough, you don't need to buy anything. If not, here are the alternatives.

## The alternatives at a glance

| | Price | Best at | Not built for |
|---|---|---|---|
| **CleanMyMac** | $39.95/yr, or $119.95 once (1 Mac) | One-click care, malware scanning, uninstaller | Developer and AI files; file tools |
| **DaisyDisk** | $9.99 once, up to 5 Macs | A fast, visual disk map | Suggesting what's safe to delete |
| **iStat Menus** | $11.99 once | Detailed live stats in the menu bar | Clean-up |
| **Vitals** | $39 once for 1 Mac | One row per app, history, alerts | Clean-up; file tools |
| **OneMacTools** | One-time, from $19 for 1 Mac | Explained clean-up, Mac health with history, 151 file tools | Malware scanning |

## DaisyDisk: the best disk map

DaisyDisk shows your disk as an interactive sunburst. It's fast and focused, it understands purgeable space and APFS snapshots, and it's cheap: $9.99 once for up to five Macs.

**Where it stops:** it shows you what's big, but you decide what each folder is and whether it's safe to delete.

## iStat Menus: the deepest live monitoring

iStat Menus puts detailed readings in the menu bar: per-core CPU, GPU, sensors, fans, disk health and network. It has notification rules and costs $11.99 once.

**Where it stops:** it's a monitor, not a cleaner.

## Vitals: Activity Monitor, made readable

Vitals groups processes into one row per app, keeps history, sends alerts and shows dev servers. It also has GPU, Neural Engine and fan tabs. It costs $39 once for one Mac.

**Where it stops:** it doesn't clean up storage or work with files.

## OneMacTools: clean-up and health in one app

[OneMacTools](/) combines both halves. It's also a toolkit of 151 file tools, which is why many people already have it.

**For a full Mac,** Mac Clean Up scans Downloads, Desktop, Movies, Pictures, caches, logs, Xcode data and Applications. It sorts what it finds into groups like old installers, big videos, duplicate copies, similar photos and apps you haven't opened in three months. It also explains what's inside System Data. You review each group, and everything goes to the **Trash**, so you can put it back. For big videos it offers **Shrink instead**, so you keep the video at a fraction of the size.

It also knows developer and AI files: old `node_modules`, Docker data, and what apps like Claude, Cursor and Ollama keep on disk.

**For a slow Mac,** Mac Health shows one row per app, says what's wrong in one line, and keeps history with alerts. You can look back at yesterday, not just now.

**Where it stops:** OneMacTools doesn't scan for malware. If that's what you need, CleanMyMac or a dedicated security app is the better choice.

## Which one should you choose?

- **You only need to see what's big:** DaisyDisk.
- **You want live stats in the menu bar:** iStat Menus.
- **You want one-click care with malware scanning:** CleanMyMac.
- **You want explained clean-up, Mac health with history, and file tools, paid once:** [OneMacTools](/download).
- **You only need the basics:** Storage settings and Activity Monitor, for free.

## Questions

### Do Macs need a cleaner app at all?

Not always. macOS manages caches by itself, and Storage settings handles the basics. A cleaner helps most when your disk is nearly full and you can't tell what's in System Data, or when old downloads, videos and project folders have piled up.

### Is it safe to delete System Data?

Some of it. Caches, logs, leftovers from deleted apps and old iPhone backups are usually safe. App data for apps you use, and anything in /System, are not. Our guide explains [what System Data is and how to clear it](/guides/what-is-system-data-on-mac).

### Will a cleaner speed up my Mac?

Only if storage is nearly full. Most slowdowns come from one app using too much memory or CPU. A monitor that names the app, like Mac Health or Vitals, gets you to the fix faster. See [why is my Mac slow?](/guides/why-is-my-mac-slow)

### What's the cheapest CleanMyMac alternative?

The built-in tools are free. Among paid apps, DaisyDisk ($9.99 once for five Macs) and iStat Menus ($11.99 once) are the cheapest. OneMacTools is a one-time licence that also includes 151 file tools.
